Neil deGrasse Tyson weighs in on election outcome with the 'Cosmic Perspective'
Some of you might be feeling a little overwhelmed and shocked after the election results. Some of you may even feel like it's the end of the world; it isn't, don't worry. So leave it to Neil deGrasse Tyson to help put things into perspective by adding a little intergalactic science with a principle he calls the 'Cosmic Perspective.'
Speaking to Stephen Colbert yesterday, deGrasse Tyson explained what he meant by the 'Cosmic Perspective' hoping to ease some fellow citizen's minds, "For me... it's what the world looks like after you've studied the vastness of the universe and you come back to earth and it's this little spec and people warring and fighting."
To illustrator the point further deGrasse Tyson continued with a quote from Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, "You develop and instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world and a compulsion to do something about it. From out there on the moon, international politics looks so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter million miles and say, 'Look at that, you son of a bitch.'"
As many are familiar, Neil deGrasse Tyson has always touted himself as an educator first, helping both young and old discover the fascinating world of science. Using his own 'cosmic perspective' the mission of the next four years, for deGrasse Tyson is to, "make America smart again," we think the American people are pretty darn smart already, we also know the American people are also a little bit scared.
So find comfort in the words of Neil deGrasse Tyson, wrap yourself up in one of his quotes, or a shirt bearing his signature cosmic vest and let's get to work.
